How to Play Tonk Online

The rules of tonk require a bit of explaining but if you play through a couple practice games, you should get it down in no time. The main thing to understand is that your goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand before anyone else does. The first person to discard his entire hand is declared the winner.

Each game of Tonk begins with the players agreeing upon a wager or stake for which the game will be played. You both then add the money to the pot, which will later be awarded to the winner. When deciding which stakes to play, make sure you keep in mind that there are certain occasions in which the loser has to pay twice the agreed-upon amount.

The Deal

Gameplay begins with each player receiving 2 cards. Then, one card is taken from the top of the deck and placed face-up on the table to begin the discard pile. The remaining cards in the deck are set face-down to serve as the stock.

The first thing each player does now is tally up the point total of the cards in his hand. If your hand is worth exactly 49 or 50 points, you must announce It and show your cards. Your Turn

Assuming there is no tonk, gameplay continues with the first player to the left of the dealer. Play will progress to the left this way as the players take their turns.

There are two things you can do when it is your turn. First, you can elect to “drop” and declare that your hand’s point total is lower than everyone else’s. The other players then show their hands and point totals are compared. If the person who dropped is correct, the game ends and that player wins the pot. However, if you drop and are wrong, you lose the game and must pay twice the original stake to each other player who has an equal or lower points total.

If you decide not to drop, you must then take either the top card from the discard pile or one card from the stock. Then, you can get to work getting rid of cards in your hand by laying books and runs.

Books and Runs

Laying books and runs is how you get rid of the cards in your hand. A run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. For example, the cards 2h, 3h and 4h would form a run. A book is three or more cards of the same rank. For example, the cards 9h, 9s, 9d and 9c would form a book. Playing your own book or run in this manner is called melding.

Alternatively, you can lay off or hit existing books and runs. For example, if someone previously played a 9h, 9s and 9c and you have the remaining 9, you could simply add it to the existing book. For another example, let’s say the table has a run consisting of 2h, 3h and 4h and you have a 5h. You can lay off your 5h by placing it next to the existing run.

You may make as many plays as you wish in a turn. Your turn ends with you discarding one card by placing it face up on top of the discard pile. If you run completely out of cards by either melding or discarding, you win the game and collect the other players’ wagers.

Just remember that your goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand first by laying your own melds or by laying off on other peoples’ melds. Get rid of the cards in your hand first and you win.

Remember also that you need to count your hand value to check for a tonk and that you can drop during your turn if you suspect your points total is lower than everyone else’s. Apart from those two outcomes, the game plays as normal with everyone trying to get rid of their cards.

Tonk is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards and each card has a point value in the game. All picture cards are worth 10 points, but aces are worth only 1 point.

The rest of the cards are worth their face value in points. A 2 is worth 2 points, a 3 is worth 3 points, and so on.

Starting a Game

If there’s money on the game, then the stakes need to be agreed upon before starting. The usual procedure is for each participating player to put up a fixed amount of money per hand, with the winner of a hand then taking that fixed amount from each player. A game can consist of several hands.

Players then cut the cards to determine who will be the first dealer. Whichever player gets the highest card will deal first, and the deal then passes clockwise on all subsequent hands.

To begin a hand, each player is dealt three, five, seven, or twelve cards face down. The number of cards dealt depends on the number of players taking part.

If a player is dealt cards that give them a total points value of 50, they must declare this immediately. This is known as a tonk, and it wins the hand immediately. When a player wins with a tonk they win double the normal stakes from each player.

Some people also play the rules where a points value of 49 is a tonk, and some where a points value of 11 or lower is a Tonk. When playing with these rules, it’s normal that a tonk of 50 will beat one of 49, which will beat one of 11.

Assuming there is no tonk, the dealer turns over the first undealt card face up to start the discard pile. The rest of the undealt cards are placed face down to start the stock pile. Play then starts to the dealers’ left and continues in a clockwise direction.

On their turn, a player must take one card from either the discard pile or the stockpile, and throw away one card by placing it face up on the top of the discard pile. Below is a screenshot from a game of tonk being played online.

The aim of the game is to use your cards to form spreads. A spread is made up of three or more cards of the same rank (for example three 10s or four jacks) or three or more cards of the same suit in sequence (for example 3, 4, 5, 6 of diamonds).

When you have a spread in your hand, then you can place that spread down during your turn by laying it down in front of you on the playing surface face up.

During your turn you may also add cards to any spreads you have previously put down or any spreads any other player has put down.

Winning a Hand

We’ve already mentioned how a hand can be won at the very beginning by having a tonk, but there are other ways to win too.

The first player to do this wins the hand. They are then paid the agreed stake by each of the other players.

You can also win a hand by what is known as dropping. This can usually only be done at the start of your turn, before drawing, but some people play rules where you can do this after drawing too.

To drop you must place all of your cards face up on the table, and all the other players must then do the same.

If you drop and do not have the lowest points value this is known as being caught. You’ll have to pay the previously agreed stake to each player that has a lower points value than you.
